BILL WOULD PROTECT DOMESTIC ABUSE SURVIVORS FROM FINANCIAL ABUSE

A bill to help survivors of economic abuse has passed its first hurdle. Jeannine and Patrisha were two of five Survivors who testified in front of the Legislature's Judicial Committee April 2 in favor of LD748, which — groundbreaking for the United States—would recognize economic abuse as part of domestic abuse, Jeannine came up with the idea for the bill following her own saga of economic abuse, and crafted it with her representative, and the bill’s sponsor, Jessica Fay (D-Raymond).
In mid-April, it passed out of the committee 12 to 1. Jeannine said, ”The bill would allow courts to order compensation to domestic abuse survivors for certain losses as a result of economic abuse. It would also halt debt collection efforts against victims of economic abuse if they can demonstrate their perpetrators fraudulently stole their identities to obtain cash or credit.
